Fishery experts from all over the world will assemble at the Global Fishery Forum

Representatives of the world’s largest fisheries and food organizations confirmed their participation in the Second Global Fishery Forum. In 2018, the Forum’s topic is ‘Global Fishing Activities 2050: resources, markets, technologies’. An extensive discussion of issues in international cooperation in long-term planning and management of fish resources is planned for the Forum.

“Given the integration of Russian fisheries in global fishing, collaboration with foreign partners and international fisheries organizations is of great significance. Currently, over 800 thousand tonnes of aquatic bioresources are harvested in exclusive economic zones of foreign states, in convention areas, and in the open waters of the World Ocean; it is essentially a quarter of the entire Russian catch,” said Ilya Shestakov, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation – Head of the Federal Agency for Fishery.

Many issues that are important for the sector are within the purview of international fisheries organizations in charge of fishing in individual regions or of harvesting specific resources. Representatives of the key international organizations will assemble at the GFF 2018 to consider topical problems in the fishing industry: Fred Kingston, Executive Secretary, Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO); Jacques Verborgh, President of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC); Anne Christine Brusendorff, General Secretary of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES); Suam Kim, President of the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC); Jóannes Hansen, President of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO); Ali Gucu, Coordinator of the BlackSeaFishProject of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM).

Experts of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will take active part in the event’s business programme. Árni Mathiesen, Assistant Director-General, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, will speak at the Forum’s plenary session. Ali Cemal Gücü, First Vice Chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Committee at the General Fisheries Committee for the Mediterranean at FAO UN, will take part in the ‘Aquaculture: 2050 breeding and development forecast’ discussion.

Representatives of over 50 countries are slated to take part in the Global Fishery Forum.

The Second Global Fishery Forum and Expo will be held in St. Petersburg on September 13–15 at the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Federal Agency for Fishery is the event’s organizer, and the Roscongress Foundation is the Forum’s operator.
